Founder Frank J. Brady Receives $10,000 to Expand Video Communications-Based Healthcare Initiatives for World's Children

Frank J. Brady, chairman and founder of MMC, has been named a finalist in the Purpose Prize program for his work improving children's access to healthcare through technology. Created by Civic Ventures, a San Francisco-based think tank, the Purpose Prize program recognizes individuals over the age of 60 for their social innovations and achievements. Brady, one of 15 finalists to be awarded $10,000, relies on Polycom donations of video communications systems to link the hospital network and volunteer doctors he has formed to diagnose critically ill children and teach medical personnel around the world.

In September, Civic Ventures will award five winners with The Purpose Prize and $100,000 in funding in recognition of their creativity and talent in addressing critical social issues at the local, regional and national level. The money for the prize program comes from the Atlantic Philanthropies and The John Templeton Foundation.

Brady, 63, founded MMC at St Josephs' Children Hospital in Paterson, N.J. in 1999 on the notion that children facing catastrophic illness should be entitled to receive the best and latest medical treatment despite living in underserved and rural medical communities. Since its inception, Medical Missions for Children has helped 25,000 children in over 100 nations, including the United States. Brady plans to use the $10,000 finalist prize money to build a studio at St. Joseph's so MMC can begin to create its own instructional videos on recent medical breakthroughs. Those videos will then become a part of the eight hours of daily instructional educational material the Medical Broadcasting Channel broadcasts three times daily to 89,000 hospitals worldwide.

"I am honored our program is a finalist for the first Purpose Prize awards," said Brady. "This recognition for the importance of our mission will enable MMC to expand our treatment and education telemedicine programs globally. Thanks to Polycom's and Intelsat's generous corporate support, no matter how remote healthcare workers may be, they can use video equipment and satellite time to tap into a specialist's expertise for remote consultation, diagnosis and treatment, as well as access a growing library of video material that will facilitate their own medical knowledge."

"This recognition for the importance of our mission will enable
MMC to expand our treatment & education telemedicine programs globally."

Through the use of Polycom's video conferencing equipment, MMC offers multiple programs including the Telemedicine Outreach Program, designed to offer telemedicine to electronically link a physician with a patient in a remote location; the Medical Broadcasting Channel, which broadcasts ongoing medical education worldwide; and the Giggles Children's Theater, a hospital-based program designed to offer sick and infirm children the opportunity to view and participate in performing arts activities through interactive videoconferencing technology.

"Polycom is proud to be a partner of MMC as the organization continues to pioneer the use of video technology to improve children's lives around the world," said Bob Hagerty, Polycom chairman and CEO, and member of Medical Missions' Board of Directors. "We congratulate Frank on this well-deserved award and remain committed to Medical Missions' charter, as well as Frank's vision in which doctors and nurses volunteer their time and expertise to make a difference."
