Medical School and Nonprofit Agency Collaborate
to Provide Telemedicine Services For Children
GREENVILLE, N.C. and PATERSON, N.J. - The Brody School of Medicine/Telemedicine Center at East Carolina University and Medical Missions for Children, a non-profit corporation, have joined forces to help catastrophically ill children and to elevate the level of healthcare in medically underserved communities.
The Greenville, N.C.-based Telemedicine Center provides long distance medical services, research and development, and training in the field of telemedicine. Medical Missions for Children, based in Paterson, N.J., operates the Global Telemedicine and Teaching Network, which allows hospitals in medically underserved communities to access medical expertise at major U.S. medical centers and research facilities.
The telemedicine service - which includes diagnostic support, consults, mentoring operations, and medical education - is delivered through broadband and IP video conferencing using satellite communications. The Telemedicine Center will provide technical support and introduce new technologies using Medical Missions for Children's Global Telemedicine and Teaching Network.
The other partners in the network include the United Nations, World Bank, and USAID.
