About Medical Missions for Children
Disparity of care in the
U.S. and abroad is a most unfortunate reality. Its causes are manifested in far too many ways. At this moment, more doctors and allied healthcare workers than not lack the level of knowledge needed to effectively diagnose and treat most infectious diseases, illnesses and injuries. Consequently, many children, as well as adults, too often find themselves inventoried in a hospital room somewhere rather than treated properly or referred to the appropriate source of care.
MMC seeks to address these shortcomings by targeting the 89,000 hospitals and more than 23 million allied healthcare workers worldwide with a broad curriculum of cutting-edge medical education broadcast on the Medical Broadcasting Channel, providing the expertise of specialists from tier-one mentoring institutions via remote diagnostic consultations and follow-up care using our Telemedicine Outreach Program, and by providing a virtual video library of unimpeachable medical video content to those researchers around the globe who wouldn't otherwise have access to such information using the Global Video Library of Medicine.
We do this in an effort to empower the underserved medical community and to raise their level of expertise, allowing them to share this newfound knowledge with colleagues and treat their patients more effectively. As opposed to the typical medical mission model where physicians travel, treat, and go home, we are training a sustainable workforce which in turn will impact a much greater number of patients.
MMC accomplishes all of this through a combination of state-of-the-art technology, the development of strategic partnerships with a variety of organizations including St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, Polycom Corporation, Intelsat Ltd., Montclair State University and the World Bank, the tireless work of our medical volunteers, and the generosity of our donors. We are proud that we help to facilitate "Medical Diplomacy" in order to enhance the image of the United States abroad, and we are especially proud that our network impacts millions of children year after year. |
