This program steps into the lives of caregivers and their families, and offers ideas for dealing with the stresses. Maggie Strong is author of Mainstay, a book about care giving based on her experiences in caring for her husband. She talks about the Well Spouse Foundation and other help available to care givers. OR-live Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy Using the da Vinci Surgical System During the surgery, the entire prostate gland and additional surrounding tissue will be removed through minimally invasive "keyhole" incisions - allowing the patient to experience decreased bleeding, less time in the hospital and reduced scarring. Traditionally, radical prostatectomy procedures are performed through large incisions, which often resulted in lengthy and uncomfortable patient recovery. NIH Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Seeing the Invisible by Solution NMR Spectroscopy Many biochemical processes proceed through the formation of functionally important intermediates. For example, ligand binding, enzyme catalysis and protein folding may all involve the formation of one or more intermediates along the reaction coordinate connecting the initial and final protein states. A complete understanding of each process requires, therefore, characterization of these intermediates in detail. While methods exist for studying the endpoints of these processes at atomic resolution in many cases, similar studies of the intermediates remain elusive. NMR methods for seeing such "invisible" states will be described, along with a number of applications to protein folding illustrating the power of the methodology. Presenting is Lewis E. Kay, PhD (University of Toronto). NIH - National Institutes of Health
